In today’s business world this scenario is often the norm, but there are a few key strategies to filter information and get organized so you maintain your attention despite distractions. You show up with more powerful executive presence and gain respect as an influential leader.

Although these strategies require a ‘behavior stretch’, your character traits are the integral factor. I’ve worked with a number of executives who know how their behavior gets off balance or ‘off Tilt’. Through astute self-awareness, they can easily pinpoint when they are over-using or under-using specific character traits and get back on track, quickly.

“5 Stratgies to Focus & Execute Your Top Priorities!”

Our country just cycled through a government shutdown.

Many companies are restructuring, merging, and getting acquired with leaders feeling confused about how to keep their people and organizations focused.

Other companies are leading the market in product development, and have an accelerated path to launch readiness, resulting in the need for decisive action on the right thing.

Many dedicated people, going through these changes love their work and feel a strong sense of loyalty to the company, their boss, and their customers. They have a strong work ethic, and want to excel in their current role, but they are also torn with the continuous change.

And you, as the leader, need to continually move you, your people, and your organization forward. This requires the capacity to influence and inspire your people.

  • What is the solution?

It’s simple to state, but not as simple to practice . . . ‘Embrace the growth that goes with change and practice wisdom in solving the daily challenges and high stakes crisis situations’.

Let’s look at 5 ways you can instill a feeling of trust and engagement in yourself, your people and your organization.
 
5 Strategies to Focus & Execute Your Top Priorities:

  1. During an emotional confrontation, take time to step back, examine the facts, and assess the truth in the situation. [Commendable Trait, Objective*]

    Example: When one of your ‘star leaders’ shifts from his naturally collaborative style to resisting new ideas and puts up roadblocks during a critical path in the project, there may be many factors in play. Schedule a conversation to explore the facts behind his resistance … they may surprise you!
     
  2. Each day, you’re faced with people who need your input NOW and problems that need to be solved NOW … each one takes you off track. Invest 30 minutes at the end of each day to organize your ‘to do’ list for the next day, identify your top 3 highest priorities, and practice saying ‘NO’ graciously so you are attentive despite distractions. [Commendable Trait, Mindful*]

    Example: Assuming it’s not your boss, of course . . . someone else’s definition of what you need to get done NOW doesn’t align with your priorities. Rather than getting frustrated with the person, thank them for bringing it to your attention, ask them if you could get back to them [in a reasonable amount of time], so you can give them your undivided attention.
     
  3. Two executives are demanding your time in the next 3 hours, but your boss has also asked for a high priority item. Identify a way to filter the information so that you and your boss meet the top priorities. [Commendable Trait, Selective*]

    Example: Rather than trying to filter the information on your own, ASK your boss for input on priority setting, as she will ultimately be held accountable. There may be an alternative path that neither of you would have identified on your own.
     
  4. Appearing organized often leads to increased productivity in completing your work [Commendable Trait, Disciplined*]

    Example: You’re working on multiple projects all with different timelines and levels of urgency and you’re feeling bewildered about how to set priorities. Rather than expressing your feeling of bewilderment that adds to your stress, set time aside to organize each project. According to research, you save 9 hours for every 1 hour of planning.
     
  5. Trust and confidence in each other are built through reliability in actions over time. [Commendable Trait, Consistent*]

    Example: Whether you are stressed about the pending changes at the company or in your department, delivering on your promised outcomes will help you to establish a sense of internal reliability and integrity. It also nurtures trust-based relationships that increase your ‘brand value’ to your team, your boss, and the company.
