A Message from Gerrie

How would you rate yourself on the ‘resilience’ continuum?

It’s a catch phrase for many leadership development programs, but often leaders are expected to have an endless reserve of energy and stamina to manage in today’s business world.

In a recent study by Korn-Ferry, they noted that 90% of leaders were let go due to physical or mental conditions that impacted their leadership effectiveness. That’s a bit alarming, don’t you think!

  • What can you do to change these numbers and make sure that you’re in the 10%, NOT the 90%?
  • How can you allocate the 168 hours you have in each week to elevate your capacity to deliver, consistently?

According to research, resilience is more than just a catch phrase. It’s actually an outcome of your personal mastery, self-awareness and positive mindset.

Personal Mastery involves knowing your strengths and limitations, and knowing who complements your capabilities.

Self-Awareness requires time for reflection and honest feedback from others. The term ‘blind spot’ means just that!

  • Have you engaged in an assessment to identify your ‘blind spots’ that provides anonymous feedback from those who know you best? (Tilt 365 is the NEW paradigm for 360 feedback.)

Positive Mindset goes beyond positive thinking. It’s an attitude about life that is held by great leaders and teams who have overcome adversity and challenges, moving forward in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

Feature Article:
“Elevate Your Resilient Mindset!”

We’re operating under a new normal in today’s global business world, and resilient leaders are critical to managing the continuous changes that are a daily occurrence.

It’s also important that each leader takes responsibility for their own well-being that serves to elevate their resilience and contributes to the success of their organization and growth of our economy.

Being resilient not only benefits the organization, but it significantly raises your positive well-being – mentally, physically, emotionally … and often, financially!

  • How would your well-being be elevated if you took a few small steps each day to adopt a resilient mindset?

5 Strategies that will elevate your resilient mindset include:

  1. When faced with a disruptive situation, optimize outcomes by brainstorming alternative ideas. [Commendable Trait, Resourceful*]

Example: When a client delivery is off schedule and your natural reaction is panic or frustration, there is little room for creative solutions. To optimize the outcome, STOP and THINK … What is an alternative path to get back on track?
  2. New ideas abound in the workplace, and are often greeted with cynicism. When you demonstrate positive energy toward a new idea, you open the space to quickly assess its value. [Commendable Trait, Enthusiastic*]

Example: One of your alliance partners recommends a change in direction that is opposite to the project’s strategic plan. Although it sounds like a bad idea to you, positively communicate your curiosity and inquire for understanding. It may be the company’s next million dollar idea!
  3. When there is a proven system that is effective and efficient, changing direction is often viewed as a waste of time with a lack of trust in its value. By being adaptable to new ways of doing things, you reflect an openness to innovation. [Commendable Trait, Flexible*]

Example: A process has worked for you for the past few years, and you’ve built your schedule around the established process. However, your boss just announced that the process is changing and you feel that it’s inconvenient and just one more thing to do. Rather than staying in this ‘fixed mindset’, step back and consider the advantages of the new process as it relates to the big picture.
  4. Express belief in what’s possible. [Commendable Trait, Optimistic*]

Example: In your first meeting with your new manager and peer leadership team, your boss announces a surprising change that could significantly impact the career that was outlined by your previous boss. Acknowledge your disappointment to yourself, and then mentally consider alternatives that often have a better outcome than you originally thought possible.
  5. With the continual changes in today’s business world, planning for the future is critical. When you apply keen insight, you expand positive outcomes. [Commendable Trait, Visionary*]

Example: You’re getting bored with your current role and see little room for growth in the company, and begin exploring external opportunities. Through your keen insight, you keep all options open. Although totally unexpected, the best opportunity may show up internally.
