A Message from Gerrie

How do you feel about the end of Summer?

Our energy always seems to shift into higher gear with the end of Summer. There’s a change in everyone’s schedule with an almost exponential increase in networking events, return to school for many kids and adults, and a refocus on our annual goals as they take on a greater sense of urgency with 4Q13 just one month away!

  • Looking back to the summer of 2013, what are you going to celebrate?

To celebrate the summer of 2013, I’m booked this week to meet with a small group of colleagues who attended the America Talks Business Conference in July.

We all walked away with high energy and a more expanded vision. But a vision without a plan is just a dream, so we want to make sure and follow through on our commitments!

  • But is a plan enough?

Have you ever put a plan in place, but struggled to move forward because it felt like you were pushing a boulder up the hill? According to a world renowned energy expert, initiating change requires a plan, but also multiple energy sources with Courage being on the top of the list!

How would you rate yourself on Courage? If you need a boost in Courage, read my Feature Article, “5 Strategies to Amplify Your Courage” to learn more about what it takes to step up in your life!

To your unique success,

Feature Article:
“5 Strategies to Amplify Your Courage!”

What exactly is Courage? You’ve heard about military heroes who defend our country every day and people with a serious illness who face each day with a positive outlook for tomorrow.

According to the definition of Courage, we all have challenges that strengthen or weaken our courage because they require “mental or moral strengths to venture forward, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.”

Eunice Kennedy Shriver was a model of courage. According to Maria Shriver, “She didn't buy into the propaganda of her day that women had to be soft and submissive. That took courage back then, because she grew up in a family that expected a lot from the boys and very little from the girls.” Maria Shriver, Time, 26 Oct. 2009

  • How would you benefit if you stepped up with more Courage?

5 Strategies That Will Amplify Your Courage include:

  1. Decide on one new action you’ll take in the next month that helps to expand your momentum. [Commendable Trait, Adventurous*]

Example: Do you eat lunch at your desk, always focused on completing an urgent task? Get out of your office at lunch and invite someone to join you for lunch. If you typically eat at your desk, you KNOW the courage it would take to just leave the work until after lunch.
  2. Make a decision about something you’ve procrastinated about. Then take action. [Commendable Trait, Decisive*]

Example: I’ve been rethinking a decision for the past month, and it’s been holding me back until a good friend confronted me (as only a good friend can) with the impact of my NOT deciding. It’s amazing how my increased clarity accelerated my momentum.
  3. When faced with delivering an indirect response to avoid confrontation or being straight forward with the truth, use diplomacy and tact to deliver the facts with integrity. [Commendable Trait, Honest*]

Example: When there is an upcoming change in the organization, you have an option to be upfront and explain it to your staff or avoid sharing the news until the last possible minute.

Using your judgment in being transparent and demonstrating equitable regard for what is best for all - will set the stage for more productive focus and reduce the drama that results from your organization making assumptions about the unknown.
  4. Follow through on your goal commitments. [Commendable Trait, Tenacious*]

Example: Whether you’re a mother juggling kids, work, personal time, family or an executive juggling constant change with a continuous flow of problems to be solved, staying on course with YOUR goals takes an enormous amount of tenacity and resilience!
  5. Speak up directly about your accomplishments, even when your natural response is to give the entire credit to your team. [Commendable Trait, Self-assured*]

Example: It’s your leadership that helped the team to exceed expectations. In fact, forming and leading high-performance teams is one of the most complex challenges facing leaders at all levels. By inserting an authentic reference to your contribution, you’ll stand out for your credibility and leadership.

In the next month, what is ONE courageous step you will take that stretches you beyond your comfort zone?

Keep in touch … what strategies have helped you to amplify your courage?
