A Message from Gerrie

Greetings,

All eyes have been on St. Mary’s Hospital in London this week, eagerly anticipating the birth of the heir to the British throne. The big news was announced on Monday, July 22 – it’s a boy!

The really big surprise came when William and Kate made a personal appearance the very next day on the steps of the hospital with baby boy.

As I watched William and Kate greet the HUGE crowd (how could I miss the video that is front and center on all browsers), they seemed at ease when they engaged in a personal conversation with none other than the media . . . a perfect example of trust and transparency that is so important for leaders in today’s changing world.

  • How often do you wish you could walk into a highly visible and critical meeting with such ease and confidence?

There are actually 3 key principles that I observed in William and Kate’s style … consistency, clarity and constancy that foster trust and transparency.

These are the three C’s for an influential and strong personal brand. When you are clear about who you are and what you stand for, you don’t need to hide behind a mask out of fear or uncertainty. You step out with a calm, neutral center, resulting in positive leadership influence.

Read my Feature Article, “What are the 3 secrets to William and Kate’s personal brand?” below to elevate your leadership influence that reflects transparency and fosters trust.

To your unique success,

sig

Feature Article:
“What are the 3 secrets to William and Kate’s personal brand?”

Ok, you’re not William and Kate [nor am I] who bring their own credibility, visibility, and presence because of their position. But, we’ve all observed or experienced leaders who have position power, but don’t carry it off with the same authenticity and style . . . nor does Prince Charles for that matter, wouldn’t you agree?

The three C’s of personal branding, clarity, consistency, and constancy are indicators of a powerful and memorable personal brand. Since the essence of a personal brand is the “emotional response that you evoke in others”, it’s important to add ‘positive emotional response’ to be perceived as authentic, credible and influential.

  • Clarity: If you have a strong brand, you are clear about WHO you are and who you are not. You focus on your core competency, what you deliver on exceptionally.

One example is Donald Trump who is clearly a Real Estate Mogul. When he tried to get involved with politics, he diluted his ‘brand’ and didn’t have the credibility as he does in the real estate industry.

  • Do you understand your unique promise of value that sets you apart from others?

Richard Branson is another example who has strong clarity about his personal brand. He is a risk taker and not the typical CEO in a blue suit and white shirt. He is a dare devil who dressed in a wedding gown when he launched Virgin Bridal!

  • Consistency: Strong brands are also consistent that is related to integrity. You are WHAT you say you are, and you deliver on it consistently over time. People trust your word, your promise of value. But consistency doesn’t mean you are stagnant

Madonna is an excellent example of brand consistency in that she changes her image consistently throughout her career and it’s what separates her from other entertainers. Her ability to change consistently throughout her career has served to strengthen her brand. Companies that are known for their consistent innovation and ability to manage change thrive in any economic situation.

  • Constancy: Constancy relates to your ALWAYS BEING THERE for your internal / external customers and team members.

Imagine if William and Kate were clear and consistent, but weren’t visible to the public, their adoring fans? Strong brands are always there for their customers, organizations, stakeholder groups and any others who rely on them for leadership.

Oprah is an example of someone who never goes into hiding. She cares for people and is willing to share of herself to help people advance, especially when she experiences some of her greatest challenges, such as her previous problems with the Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. Although she left her daytime show, she is now visible on her OWN network, in her magazine, and numerous appearances in the media.

She is constantly visible to her audience through her numerous ways of interacting with the public.

Does your brand pass the ‘Three C Test?’

On a scale of 1 to 5, how would you rate yourself on the 3Cs of Personal Branding?

  1. Clarity _____
  2. Consistency _____
  3. Constancy _____

YOUR COACHING CHALLENGE:

When you align WHO you are with WHAT you do, it accelerates your awareness of your distinctive value, and generates more trust and respect by others.

  1. What is your unique promise of value . . . the results and contributions that people expect from you?
  2. Are you aware of how you evoke a meaningful, positive emotional response in another person or audience?
  3. Do you convey to others a feeling of authenticity and integrity that is linked to credibility and accountability?
