Happy 2013! I hope that you enjoyed the
holiday season that now seems like eons ago.
- Did you notice … as soon as January 1
hit, there was a continual flow of media hype about New Year’s
resolutions with weight loss and fitness being at the top of the list?
Fitness is actually one of my new year’s
intentions, but there is also a way of setting a more strategic vision of
what you WANT with far more significant outcomes.
It starts with selecting a ‘THEME’ for the year.
- Your theme might be ‘adventure’
which reflects your commitment to ‘step out of my comfort zone’.
- Another theme might be ‘fun’.
If you’re someone who has difficulty with creating work-life balance for
yourself OR you may feel that you take life too seriously, you may want
to set New Year goals that reflect a more light hearted mindset in all
your activities or schedule one social or non-work event per week.
One of the THEMES that I encourage each
leader to incorporate into your New Year intentions is a goal related to
trust, integrity or ethics.
- With Oprah’s highly publicized
interview with Lance Armstrong on Thursday, January 17th, the subject of
honesty is taking center stage in the media … even before the
interview is broadcast.
- With lack of trust in senior
leadership being one of the most highly rated factors related to
employees’ lack of engagement, Armstrong’s anticipated confession
carries an even stronger message about the importance and value of
trust, integrity and ethics.

When you are aligned with your strengths, character traits, and value,

However, with the continuous changes impacting everyone on a daily
basis, it’s very easy for leaders to get ‘off center’.
Although you, as a leader put forth a lot of effort to be ‘authentically
transparent’, it’s very challenging to manage your emotions in the
middle of high stress and drama. Even though you may set an intention to
exemplify ‘trust’, ‘integrity’, and ‘ethical leadership’, it’s next to
impossible to know how you’re being perceived.
So, I’ve extensively researched the topic, and outlined 5 Behaviors
which you can assess yourself about the core factors related to ethical
leadership . . . your actions, behaviors, and character:
- Exemplify Dignity and
Respectfulness: Listen effectively to members of your
organization, be compassionate, be open to hearing opposite
viewpoints, and treat your ‘followers’ in a way that honors their
values and beliefs.
- Serve Others: Place your
follower’s interests ahead of your own, and act in a way that is
intended to create more success for members of your organization.
- Be Fair: Treat all your
followers equally with no personal bias and without differential
- Build Community: Consider
your own and your followers’ purpose, and make an effort to achieve
the goals suitable to you both; be considerate of the interests of
the overall organization and invest effort in achieving
- Practice Honesty and Be Loyal:
Demonstrate reliability and dependability that will, in turn, earn
you the respect of your followers; communicate the facts and
circumstances truly and completely without misrepresentation.
Self-awareness, gained through
assessment and honest feedback on your behavior, is critical. Leadership
is all about values, and it is impossible to be a leader if you lack the
awareness and concern for your own character, strengths, and personal
YOUR COACHING CHALLENGE:
To check yourself on a daily basis and gain greater self-awareness, keep
a copy of this list of 5 Behaviors in front of you and ask yourself, “On
a scale of 1 to 5 [with 5 being the highest and 1 being the lowest], how
would I rate myself?”
For example: “On a scale of 1 to 5, how would I rate myself in
listening effectively to members of my organization today, i.e., Did I
listen to opposite viewpoints?”
Your self-rating scale is an easy way to track your development.
The key is to notice as your ratings go up, what changes do you notice
in your direct reports, stakeholders, peers, team members?
