A Message from Gerrie

Many thanks to those who inquired about the Mindset, Leadership & Money Retreat. It was a big success, measured by the value to those who attended.

To recap the outcomes, attendees expanded their vision of possibilities and gained greater clarity about their 5 year vision and targeted 6 month goals to realize their vision. As one attendee stated, “I have a much clearer plan of where I want to go and the path forward is clearer, especially with a targeted 6 month action plan”.

We have 2 follow up calls scheduled, designed to reinforce each participant’s learning and help their outcomes stick!

Stephanie McCullough and I were honored to set the environment and process for such significant shifts to happen in just one day!

In preparing for the event, there were some changes that I observed in my own mindset, and you will be seeing results of this shift in the coming months.

  • Speaking of mindset and behavior shifts, did you get a chance to complete your Coaching Challenges from the July and August newsletters?

If you have, congratulations! You’ve tapped into some of the secrets that we uncovered at the Retreat, so you may have noticed some changes in your perspective over the past few months, especially during setbacks.

We are all faced with setbacks, and it’s how we course correct that is the key to success.

  • Did you know that these accomplished people were considered by experts to have no future . . . Lucille Ball, Elvis Presley, and Charles Darwin?

They somehow embraced the challenge of a potential setback and succeeded in becoming celebrities in their field.

  • What challenges do you have in front of you in which you can ‘move the ball forward’, as these celebrities did?

In this month’s Feature Article, you’ll learn a few key strategies to achieve extraordinary results by empowering members of your team through the third of 3 SIMPLE steps to adopt a growth mindset to your leadership role – taking ACTION!

"Mindset 301: Mindset & High Performance Teams . . ."

“What is the Mindset of a Successful Team Leader?”

Do you remember the difference between a growth and fixed mindset, described in our July Newsletter from research by Carol Dweck, a world-renowned Stanford University Psychologist?

  • In a fixed mindset, you adopt the perspective that you are born with certain talents with little room for developing new talents; your primary focus is on the outcome, not the process or adventure of learning. You also tend to accept what you know [or believe] to be true rather than questioning the status quo.

This fixed mindset can be applied to how a leader approaches their role in leading teams . . . that rarely results in high performance outcomes.

The ‘leader’ assesses the skills of the team, makes a judgment about what’s possible, and focuses their efforts on how to move the project forward with the available resources.

Although the work group is referred to as a ‘team’, it actually doesn’t fit the expert’s definition of a team … “a small group of people who work interdependently without reliance on supervision, committed to achieve one common goal with shared responsibilities and team accountability to deliver results”.
  • In a growth mindset, you adopt the perspective that you can always learn to develop new talents and capabilities through mentoring and experience; your primary focus is on the process of growth and learning, not on the success or failure of the outcome.

When a team leader approaches their team leadership role with a growth mindset, high performance results are the norm!

Leaders recognize the potential talent in each person, see their role as a process for empowering others, and model the respect they expect in the team’s interactions.

Although there might be a star player on the team, a leader with a growth mindset sees the untapped skills of all the team members and has the courage to challenge each person to stretch themselves for growth and greater contribution.

According to Joe Love of JLM & Associates, mindset shows up in how you think vs. what you do.

    - “The political [or fixed] mindset poses the question, “What can I do that will make you want to do it my way?” . . . .
    - The team [or growth] mindset poses the question, “More than 75% of the time, 75% of the people will put the company’s interests first.”
  • Which Mindset do you think results in higher performance, more engaged employees, and more innovative / profitable outcomes?

The Coaching Challenge below is designed to help you take the third of 3 SIMPLE steps to shift your mindset: Step 3, Take ACTION.

Your Coaching Challenge: What 3 behaviors or practices will you implement in the next 30 days to empower each member of your team?

A few examples include:

  • Recognize each member for a valuable contribution they make to the team’s goals.
  • Dedicate time to spend with each team member to get to know their talents and motivations and decide how you can enhance these talents.
  • During a time of high frustration and stress, take time to decompress so you model the respectful behavior you would want your team members to emulate.

Your Worksheet: The 3 behaviors or practices that you commit to take ACTION on in the next 30 days include:

"If we did all the things we were capable of doing,
we would literally astound ourselves." — Thomas Edison
