A Message from Gerrie

Have you taken time to pause over the summer season? Even if it’s for a long weekend without computers and phones, it helps to shift your perspective about what’s possible in your life.

During my long weekend in Cape Cod visiting family a few weeks ago, I enjoyed a ride on Sandy Neck Beach and took a refreshing dive into the clear and warm water, spent quality time with family, and had the luxury of reading and getting more sleep than usual.

It was perfect timing to shift my perspective, especially since I had just returned from a business conference about the influence of our mindset on success.

In the past few months, I’ve heard from a number of clients about their amazing transformations in recent years while I heard from other leaders that they’re struggling to move forward, they feel stuck and confused about HOW to advance their career.

So, it brought up some questions about WHAT the clients were doing that helped them to achieve advanced goals while other leaders continued to struggle. Based on my observation and research, it points back to ‘mindset’.

Yes, I attended a half day conference on the subject of mindset, but it really brought the concept of mindset to life when I witnessed, first-hand, the BIG changes that are possible, once you change your mindset from a fixed, contracted mindset to a growth, expansive mindset.

It takes 3 SIMPLE steps to make the shift: awareness; education; and action. They are simple steps, but I would hardly say that they are EASY because they require you to stretch your thinking and take bold action.

  • In the recent editions of Success Matters, we’ve focused on happiness, productivity, and profitability.

It struck me that it would require courage and a shift in mindset to take the BOLD action needed to apply these concepts to organizational changes, such as new business practices or company culture. And it all starts with your leadership!

So, I’m dedicating upcoming editions of
Success Matters to mindset and one whole module in our Mindset, Leadership & Money Retreat on October 12 to the 3 core elements of mindset – your beliefs, feelings, and thoughts! Combined, these create your experiences.

Are you ready to expand your mindset for greater success? Read the Feature Article below and dedicate time in the next month to complete your Coaching Challenge. Then, let me know about what changed for you.

Enjoy a uniquely perfect Summer day,

Watch for your personal invitation in August

If you’re ready to stretch your vision of success and shift your mindset from struggle and frustration to clarity and focus, mark Friday, October 12 on your calendar!

After in-depth collaboration, Stephanie McCullough and I decided to focus the October 12 Retreat on 3 topics that are intricately connected – mindset, leadership, and money!

For example: Your mindset affects your confidence in
asking for a raise or promotion. This obviously impacts your leadership capacity and earning potential. Your mindset also affects your beliefs … if you ‘believe’ that advancement will be more stressful, then you’ll hold back from even considering advancement.

Our goal is to outline the keys for you to accelerate your path forward … to help you stop struggling and get unstuck through greater clarity and focus.

  • We’ve intentionally limited the number of participants to foster the conversation, community, and personal attention that is critical to shift your mindset and focus.

SAVE the NEW DATE on your Calendar: Friday, October 12, 2012. More details to follow.

"Mindset 101: 3 Simple Steps to LEAP Forward"

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.” Henry Ford

The story of Thomas Edison’s ‘mindset’ around his invention of the light bulb is a perfect example of how your mindset is often the difference between success and failure.

Thomas Edison was interviewed by a young reporter who boldly asked Mr. Edison if he felt like a failure after thousands of attempts to create a light bulb, and if he thought he should just give up.

Perplexed, Edison replied, "Young man, why would I feel like a failure? And why would I ever give up? I now know definitively over 9,000 ways that an electric light bulb will not work. Success is almost in my grasp." And shortly after that, and over 10,000 attempts, Edison invented the light bulb.

There are two polar opposites related to mindset that have been extensively researched by Carol Dweck, a world-renowned Stanford University Psychologist . . . a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. Edison, obviously, had a growth or expansive mindset.

  • In a fixed mindset, you adopt the perspective that you are born with certain talents with little room for developing new talents; your primary focus is on the outcome, not the process or adventure of learning. You also tend to accept what you know [or believe] to be true rather than questioning the status quo.

For example, if you believe that you can only advance your career one level at a time, the possibility of advancing two levels would never occur to you, so you wouldn’t even ask.

The paradox of a fixed mindset is often seen in people who experience BIG success. They begin to fear failure if they take a risk to stretch themselves. So, rather than continuing to grow and develop, they stay stuck and hit a plateau.
  • In a growth mindset, you adopt the perspective that you can always learn to develop new talents and capabilities through mentoring and experience; your primary focus is on the process of growth and learning, not on the success or failure of the outcome.

For example, if a position opens up that really interests you and is two or even three levels above your current level, you’ll apply for the position to explore the possibility. You’re thinking more about how you can position yourself in the best way possible for the position, rather than worry about being rejected.

As a point of reference, what we don’t see beneath the surface is that your unconscious beliefs create feelings of fear, doubt or confidence. These feelings create thoughts which then create your experiences.

So, if you have an unconscious belief that your income will never surpass a set point of
$100K or $250K, challenges and obstacles start to show up just when you’re about to hit your money set point. This is a major factor in people ‘struggling’ to advance, only to feel like they’re stuck or boxed into a corner.

  • Are you open to stretching yourself and uncovering some of the hidden factors that drive your experiences?

The Coaching Challenge below is designed to help you take the first of 3 SIMPLE steps to shift your mindset: Step 1, Increase Your Awareness.

Your Coaching Challenge: In the month ahead, identify a goal that you’ve wanted to achieve, but whenever you get close to the goal, something distracts you. This could be a goal related to weight or fitness, money, relationship or your career.

1. Make a note about the distractions that show up and get in your way.
2. Reflect back on how you felt when you got distracted or what you were thinking about.

Since most of you have experienced a career transition / job search, let’s use that as an example:

  • During your job search, did you stand firm in your belief that you would land the right job, feeling confident about the value that you would contribute? OR . . .
  • Did you worry about the competition in the marketplace or feel discouraged about the availability of jobs because of the poor economy?

Coaching Question: Which perspective would help you to NOTICE new opportunities that unexpectedly show up and take action?

3. Describe the process that would set you up to experience personal growth, remove the distractions, and help you to stretch yourself and step out of your comfort zone (i.e,, shift your mindset).

Then, send me an email about your observations and experiences.

According to Napolean Hill, “No man is ever whipped until he quits in his own mind.”
