Greetings,

Does this sound familiar …. We’re operating in a bewildering new environment in which little is certain that has profound implications for the people in my organization and the people who lead the organization [including myself!]

This is a reference from The McKinsey Quarterly, June 2012, in which McKinsey interviewed six global leaders to uncover their experience in confronting the personal and professional challenges in this NEW world of work.

We’ve focused on happiness, productivity, and profitability in the past three editions of
Success Matters which seem like rather lofty topics to me, based on the challenges that the leaders described in the Quarterly, very similar to the challenges that you face each day.

In addition, there are more and more references in the media about the cost of disengaged employees who are estimated to be greater than 50% of the employee population.

However, each of the executives interviewed in the McKinsey report reflect the importance of each person taking responsibility for their own ‘engagement’. They stressed the importance of their being fully engaged through practices such as mindfulness, meditation, yoga, as well as the foundational practice of ‘precise routines for diet, sleep, exercise, and staying connected’.

  • Do you take time for this type of ‘extreme self-care’, a term adopted by a world renowned Master Certified Coach, Cheryl Richardson?

The simple practice of self-care holds a lot of promise for developing a more engaged workforce … and happier people! Which would ultimately save companies billions of dollars . . . Gallup researched the cost to be as much as $1 for every $3 spent on payroll!

It seems like a daunting initiative to adopt even one practice that would shift your mindset and increase your organization’s happiness factor, doesn’t it!

The executives quoted in McKinsey’s Quarterly also commented that ‘leaders face extraordinary new challenges and must learn to think differently … those who do have an opportunity to change the world in ways their predecessors never imagined’.

"HAPPINESS & Leading in the 21st Century"

The topic about disengaged employees is multi-factored and even top executives are aware that THEY need to have solid practices in place to stay engaged.

Gallup jumped onboard in 2008 with the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index study intended to provide data that would improve health, increase productivity, and lower healthcare costs. Since the study was initiated, they have polled more than 1,000 U.S. adult workers daily about their mental state at any given moment.

The study acknowledges six factors that impact well-being including life evaluation, physical health, emotional health, healthy behavior, work environment, and basic access.

Great News! The life evaluation rating for June 15, 2012 indicated that Americans' Life Evaluation ratings were edging higher, i.e., more Americans were "thriving" and fewer were "struggling" in May than have been since February of last year [2011].

  • 54% of Americans rated their lives highly enough to be considered thriving last month while 42.6% were considered struggling.

The impact of a higher Life Evaluation rating on happiness and employee engagement could be significant …

1. Happiness gives you energy – to work hard, think more clearly, and engage in what you’re doing.
2. Engaged employees produce more, make more money for the company [and themselves], and create emotional engagement with the customers they serve.
3. Engaged employees typically stay with an organization longer, and are more committed to quality and growth.

Imagine if you could move all of your employees [including yourself!] to the ‘engaged’ category …

  • There is so much evidence that points to the value of engaged and happy employees, so why aren’t more leaders jumping onboard?

The business world has historically reinforced the value of working longer hours, going the extra mile, pushing through barriers.

But, it’s a NEW message when six C-level executives report the value of managing their energy, reading poetry for relaxation, managing their psyche to be able to make quick decisions with a global perspective, keeping their integrity, and emphasizing the importance of stable emotional relationships outside the company.

  • Are you open for taking a bold step this month to increase your happiness and engagement?

Your Coaching Challenge: In the next month, initiate just ONE practice that boosts your sense of well-being, happiness and engagement. Be really bold and ask the same of your organization! The changes will be subtle, but observe what happens.

1. Is there more progress on a project that’s been constantly delayed?
2. Are there fewer problems related to interpersonal issues reported each day?
3. Do you hear fewer customer complaints?
4. Are you able to schedule 30 minutes for dedicated strategic thinking [each day, each week] to step outside the daily pressures and see the bigger picture?
5. Do you have more energy at the end of the day?
