A Message from Gerrie

Have you identified the themes that you want to focus on in 2012? It’s one of the annual exercises with I do each year as I set my goals and map out a realistic action plan.

A theme is more of an internal focus for the year, similar to a mantra. It may be new to some of you, so here are a few examples of themes that others have defined: Believe; Adventure; Action; Trust; Fun … you get the idea?

Tina Reale posted her 2011 theme ‘Trust’ online []. She experienced so many amazing outcomes, that she is going with the Trust theme again, but much bigger. The quote on her blog is:

“If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.”

Do you feel some confusion about which theme to select for your life when you have one theme for your professional life and one for your personal life? I bet that they are actually one and the same.

For example, if the theme for your professional life is ‘thrive’ and the theme for your personal life is ‘vitality’ . . . Would the one word that integrates the two themes be ‘adventure’?

During the Virtual Workshop that I just delivered in January,
Celebrate 2012!, we identified the key factors that successful people DO to transform their lives …

  1. Select ONE life area that is your highest priority and focus on that one for the first 3 months so you master the change habits … then move to another life area.
  2. Make a decision and commit to follow through.
  3. Define the pain if you don’t achieve your goal and the pleasure if you do.
  4. Transform limiting beliefs to empowering beliefs [what you THINK].
  5. Set effective goals [what you SAY].
  6. Take Action [what you DO]
  • What theme have you selected as your ‘mantra’ for 2012?

I’ve selected the theme ‘Adventure’ to set as my mantra for 2012! There are so many new trends, and all point to NEW, innovative ways of transforming OLD paradigms … all are very exciting and inspiring.

Enjoy a uniquely perfect day,

Feature Article:
"What does HAPPINESS have to do with Driving Profit?"

If you were asked to answer the question, “What brings you the greatest happiness in your job?”, would you be able to pinpoint one thing?

It’s a fascinating question, and one that would confuse many people, including leaders who are trying to engage their people to achieve BIG stretch goals while working in an uncertain environment.

However, it’s the focus of a new book,
The Zappos Experience by Joseph A. Michelli. Zappos has experienced unparalleled business growth by making work fun, fostering strong personal connections with customers, and having a solid business model.

They even have a Life Coach on staff to coach employees to achieve whatever 30-day goal they want, and it doesn’t have to be related to work. The employee simply signs up so when a slot becomes available, they get started working towards their 30-day goal. The top 3 goals that employees bring to their coaching sessions:

  1. Career Development
  2. Weight Loss
  3. Management of Personal Finances / Budgeting

What would you bring to your company’s Life Coach? Make sure to add it to your Intentions for 2012.

The Harvard Business Review posted a blog entry on 1/23/12 with the title,
“Why Appreciation Means So Much”. The article outlined 4 practical steps to build a high performing and sustainable team, using Appreciation!

  1. Do less harm and hold people’s value.
  2. Practice appreciation, starting with yourself.
  3. Make it a priority to notice what others are doing right.
  4. Be appreciative.

And the cover story of the Harvard Business Review, January / February 2012 edition is "The Value of Happiness: How Employee Well-being Drives Profits.”

It’s a new year with a shifting paradigm that is projected to transform our economy … all focused on showing appreciation for and valuing employees. Ultimately, employees will be ‘happier’, and as a result … more engaged and productive with higher performance.

Your Coaching Challenge:

  1. Identify 3 ways that you can show appreciation for yourself and your team and then put the 3 things into action.
  2. Define 1 thing that brings you ‘happiness’ in your job each day.
  3. Write down your ‘theme’ for 2012.

Congratulations on LEAPing forward with more positive focus about what’s possible in 2012!
