Greetings,

If you haven’t heard of Seth Godin, he’s a thought leader and author who is recognized for his expansive thinking about topics that need our attention. But, have you heard his description of the NEW American Dream?  It’s fascinating and outlined in his new, ground breaking book, Linchpin.

In Linchpin, Seth maps the history and work styles required from the farming era to the industrial age through to the current knowledge based environment that has impacted the American Dream. 

To me, the continuous changes in our business environment now make more sense.  Although it concerns me because of the impact on so many people, Seth provides a message of hope and inspiration with practical strategies to stand out IN the NEW American Dream scenario. 

Now that I’ve piqued your curiosity, below is a comparison snapshot of the OLD and NEW American Dream, but Seth’s explanation in Linchpin provides the broader context … I encourage you to check it out!

  • Have your dreams changed over the past 3-5 years?  More and more people are letting go of their preconceived vision of career success, i.e., taking the next step up the corporate ladder.  Instead, they are considering re-invention options and industry changes while taking more risks in unknown career directions. 

According to Maria Gamb, our Virtual Café Expert on May 11, we are at a “time to ADVANCE and move FORWARD.  We've just gone through a period of reflection [my two cents . . . some also refer to it as a recession].  It is part of the seasonal cycle of change and transformation called "The Reveal".  The period of time when we have all been asked to review what worked, what didn't work, and how we may have compromised ourselves over the past decade.  This is on both a personal and professional level.

  • Do you know what is most important to you on which to ADVANCE and move FORWARD? 

Some leaders are declining what appear to be prestigious opportunities so they can experience their children’s growing years rather than accepting a global position with extensive travel.  Still other leaders are letting go of ‘having to do it all’ and rearranging their lifestyle to include activities, such as Zumba dancing for fun and exercise.

“Have you embraced the NEW American Dream?”

With the continuous changes in corporate America, leaders are conflicted about whether to stay with their current company or seek other opportunities.  If you’re in the midst of an acquisition or merger right now or have experienced one in the past, I’m sure that you’ve heard similar stories from your colleagues.

Although leaders know that they need to ‘get known’, the question is ‘by whom’?  All the players are changing, so the executive who gave you clues about wanting to hire you into his organization may have moved on.  So, it often feels like you’re proving yourself all over. 

There are some clues that Seth shared with us to embrace the NEW American Dream to help you ‘get known’ that you are already doing!  So, you’re much closer to being ready to ADVANCE and move FORWARD than you may have thought!

#1.  Be Remarkable. Do you hold back on Being Remarkable in your career because you’re uncertain about your position?   You can also be remarkable by being generous, demonstrating creativity, and a quality that you’ll hear more about on April 13  . . . nurturing your relationships.

#2.  Be Generous!  I’ve observed leaders who have stepped up to take on an additional initiative, as long as it didn’t significantly impact what ‘was most important’ to him.  The key is to not tie YOUR agenda to your generous act. Tie it to the best interest of the company.

#3.  The next component of the NEW American Dream is Create Art.  Do you know your inner artist?  If you’re an executive, it may surprise you, but you definitely have an inner artist.  You’ve created a vision for product launches, developed a powerful leadership team, and crafted inspiring messages about critical business issues.   When I recently complimented a leader about her creativity, she was surprised because she didn’t connect ‘creativity’ with her organizational talents in launching a major program.

If you don’t feel connected with your inner artist, ask a few of your trusted advisors for their feedback on your inner artist.  It’s in there!

#4 - #5 - Now, this is where your strengths really shine … you Make Judgment Calls and Connect People And Ideas!

As a leader, you think on your feet, operate strategically, and take initiative to achieve business outcomes with only high level directives, i.e., you Make Judgment Calls.  You take calculated risks and redirect projects when the unexpected takes you off course. 

Being known as an Influencer, someone who makes things happen, boils down to ‘how’ you Connect People And Ideas.  Those who really enjoy connecting other people and generating ideas have a high ‘know-like-trust’ rating! 

Many people know them, they are easy to approach so there is a high like factor, and they say what they mean and mean what they say.  Their consistency and authenticity result in a high trust factor. 

Again, it’s back to what Maria Gamb wrote about in her journal entry for today, are you ready to ADVANCE and move FORWARD?
