A Personal Note from Gerrie

Greetings,

Being a great leader in our accelerated vortex of business change can be complicated and a bit overwhelming.

  • Have you ever felt that way?

There are many capabilities that are attributed to great leaders that include the ability to have difficult conversations, develop high performance teams, and think strategically . . . to name a few.

However, at the core of all of these capabilities is one leadership characteristic or ‘virtue’ that informs and strengthens all the others. Courage!

Aristotle referred to courage as the mother of all virtues . . . “Courage is the mother of all virtues because without it, you cannot consistently perform the others.” Aristotle

  • Consider your function and role … if you strengthened your Courage, what would be impacted?

According to Bill Treasurer, Entrepreneur’s Organization, Courage is needed to take initiative and step up to the plate, be open to direction and change, and share unpopular opinions so they are heard.

  • Although Courage is a teachable and learned skill, there is a long list of characteristics accredited to great leaders, so where do you start?

In upcoming editions of ‘Courageous Leader’, I’ll be sharing a series of evidence-based ‘executive self-assessments’ that will help you identify the development points for you and your organization that will strengthen your Courage.

In this month’s edition, our focus is on a one page Leader’s Dashboard*, a tool that has been tested with leaders and executives in 32 countries around the world, in almost every industry. It helps leaders to “Stay Focused on What Really Matters”, the title of this edition’s feature article.

The Dashboard applies to large and small companies alike, and sets the foundation to align you and your organization with clear accountability.

“From Vision to Tactics:
How to stay focused on what really matters”  

Reflection Questions:

  • Do you ever feel like this leader who is walking a tightrope over a complicated maze searching for answers and keys to success?

  • On a scale of 1 to 10, how frequently would you estimate that you walk this tightrope?

  • What is the impact of this stress on you and your organization?

Two of the 10 capabilities that have been attributed to great leaders are the ability to lead change and make decisions that move people and strategy forward.

However, there are times when you feel like you’re walking this tightrope . . . when fear and self-doubt set in. The inner work incorporated into the Leader’s Dashboard helps leaders to shift from uncertainty to confidence and focus. In the process, they also strengthen the courage in their people by modeling their own leadership courage.

  • With less fear and strengthened Courage, people are open to more challenging projects, are more adaptable to change, and have a stronger voice about critical issues.

That said, leading an organization, team or project requires tremendous resilience, patience, and coping skills. For example:

  • How many crises do you address every day?

  • How many requests for your time distract you from achieving your real goals and handling your primary responsibilities?

  • What types of unprecedented pressures do you face each day, e.g., changing markets, demanding customers, competitor breakthroughs?

Two of the 8 components of the Leader’s Dashboard that focus on the inner work needed to strengthen your Courage include:

Your Edge. Successful people and organizations have an edge.

  • What talents and skills do you have that are valuable?

  • How does your organization define its Edge in the marketplace?

Performance Metrics. Ultimately, you are paid to perform.

  • How is your performance defined?

  • What do the Metrics mean for your career and for the organization?

Key metrics provide quantitative feedback about whether you are doing a great job, and whether your organization is moving forward.

  • Do you use the data to communicate what you need to do and what you need others to do for more integrated alignment?
