Imagine . . . you have a solid vision mapped out and a compelling strategy to bring your vision to life. You pull your team together in an ‘all hands’ meeting and share the great news with your team.

But, no one asks questions about the new direction. So, you end the meeting and thank them for their commitment to move forward.

Then you wonder, Are they are really onboard with the exciting vision that you shared with them?

You are asking the right question! Research points to “only 30% of organizations execute their strategies effectively”. So, the other 70% of projects are NOT executed well.

That’s a bit shocking, wouldn’t you agree?

In one highly respected organization, one leader brought diverse styles and functions together into fully engaged high performance teams to execute a company-wide change. It also required them to go above and beyond their job responsibilities.

Her success was attributed it to her consensus strategy. One leader felt that he had consensus with 51% alignment; she was a 75% or greater alignment leader!

Did it require a longer alignment cycle? Absolutely!

But, as you’ll read in the Featured Article, “5 Steps to Align Your Team for Remarkable Outcomes”, when you follow a few simples steps, you significantly increase engagement, productivity, and efficiency. Of course, your leadership effectiveness gets noticed, also!

Feature Article:
“5 Steps to Align Your Team
for Remarkable Outcomes”  

  • Are you a manager with responsibility to engage your direct reports around their annual performance plans?
  • Are you a leader who is charged with aligning your team to execute on strategy flawlessly?

Both require clear communication about your vision and corresponding strategy. However, according to the research that I referenced in my ‘Personal Note’ above, these statistics are also something to take note about:

  • “95% of managers within an organization report they do not fully understand what the strategy is

  • 75% of managers do not (feel that they) have a stake in the strategy’s success

  • 85% of leaders spend less than one hour / month talking about strategy”

There IS a solution! Paul J.H. Schoemaker outlined the strategies below in his article, “How to Rally Your Team Around a New Strategy” in INC Magazine and I’ve added my two cents, based on 10+years of leading high performance matrixed teams!

  1. Communicate: During change, trust is one of the most important factors to instill in your organization. Especially during times of high stress and an accelerated pace, consistent, brief, and frequent communication helps to generate higher trust.
  2. Bring all stakeholders into the conversation: Often one organization makes decisions that impact other organizations. Because there are such tight timelines on every project, leaders are forced to shorten the collaboration time. By investing the time, you’ll increase engagement and actually reduce the cycle time.
  3. Embrace resistance and diverse perspectives: Strategic leaders courageously address conflict, bring out differing opinions, and develop win-win outcomes.
  4. Go for >51% alignment: People own solutions when it’s in their gut, not just their head. Rather than accepting that you have people’s buy-in because they don’t voice their disagreement, take time to check each person’s ownership of their part in executing the strategy flawlessly.
  5. Ensure clear and committed direction: According to Howard Guttman in his book, “Great Business Teams”, he outlines his company’s alignment process (Chapter 4, pages 79-110) that has turned teams and companies around! Key factors include business deliverables, roles and responsibilities, decision protocols, business relationships, and “new performance muscle”.

Your Coaching Challenge: Are you a 51% or a 75% alignment leader?

In the month ahead, invest time to align your team and organization around your strategic vision!

  1. Communicate often.
  2. Create a cross-functional advisory board of all stakeholders to expedite effective decision making and alignment.
  3. Embrace debate for richer decision making.
  4. Invest the time to align your team in their gut.
  5. Ensure clear and committed direction on shared purpose, vision, value and goals with a mutual respect for their respective roles and strengths.
