A Personal Note from Gerrie

Greetings,

Did you join with the millions of Americans who watched the World Cup match between U.S. and Germany?

Even if you had other pressing commitments and didn’t use the ‘permission to get out of work slip’ penned by the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team coach, World Cup news is at a fever pitch.

According to sports experts, the U.S. team’s positive mindset that is “brimming with confidence and possessing the ability to disrupt the midfield” could be one of the key factors in their win against Belgium, one of the most technically sound teams in the tournament.

  • Could another factor be their critical thinking?

In a Harvard Business Review article, critical thinking was pinpointed as the foundation of executive intelligence … but how does it play out in the real world even in the World Cup match between the U.S. and Belgium?

  • What do you think . . . Are the U.S. players positioned to think clearly, sort through the clutter, and anticipate well?

As with business leaders, the U.S. team’s ability to think critically in intense and often ambiguous situations will contribute to the team’s competitive edge on Tuesday!

To elevate your ability to think critically while leading authentically, I invite you to read the Featured Articles, “4 Secrets to Executive Intelligence”

“4 Secrets to Executive Intelligence”

  • Does your brand reflect personal attributes such as being inquisitive, confident in reasoning, open-minded, or truth-seeking!

Although critical thinking requires you to step up, have a voice, and check out your perceptions to breakthrough conventional mindsets, you also stand out as a respected leader by your ability to distinguish primary goals from less relevant concerns, anticipate outcomes, and recognize agendas.

But, leaders who continually raise contrarian views may be met with resistance to their ideas.

It’s all in the delivery and is often referred to as ‘edge walking’. When done with thoughtfulness and awareness of your context, you’re respected for your distinctive thinking style.

To elevate your ‘executive intelligence’ capabilities, consistently put the following behaviors into practice:

  1. Slow down. How many times have you been in a problem solving session only to jump to solution before all the relevant data is considered? Critical thinkers insist on multiple problem definitions to reach a well informed decision.

  2. Step back from incremental thinking. For innovative ideas to grow, critical thinkers test deeply held assumptions, especially when faced with new challenges or slowly deteriorating situations.

  3. Embrace different opinions. But, focus the conflict on ideas and not on people. Debate can be perceived as criticism of the person rather than critical thinking for more creative outcomes. Critical thinkers earn respect for their insights by recognizing that different is not always better, seeking to understand the value of conventional wisdom, and also expanding awareness about blind spots.

  4. Seek out people who test and expand your thinking. Critical thinkers have a natural curiosity and place a high value on learning. Rather than avoiding those who see the world differently, critical thinkers get involved with others who help them reframe their thinking and avoid accepting ‘safe opinions’ at face value.

Your Coaching Challenge:

In the month ahead, be observant of ways to test conventional wisdom and think more critically while earning the respect of your colleagues:

  1. What current problem needs to be reframed so you get to the root cause?
  2. What goal is full of obstacles that you can challenge and shift your mindset and beliefs?
  3. What project, team or organizational decision would benefit from your raising contrarian perspectives that conflict with conventional wisdom?
