A Personal Note from Gerrie
It’s the unofficial start to the Summer
that always brings a new outlook with longer days, summer weather patterns,
and vacation time.
- As I thought about the effort that is
invested in vacation planning, one question came up … would you
attribute your successful vacation planning to strategic thinking?
I assume you anticipate unexpected
changes so you’re prepared and question the vendors involved with the
What are other ways you would describe your planning style? Here are a few
examples. . .
- If there is any ambiguity or
inconsistency, are you comfortable with moving ahead, holding steady
until relevant information is researched or do you need every detail
carefully mapped out before making a decision?
- If you need to hold off on decisions
until every detail is meticulously confirmed, how do you know when the
information is ‘good enough’ to feel confident about your decision?
The entire vacation planning process is a
perfect model to test out some new strategic behaviors… are you game?
You may also save a lot of time … you save 9 hours for every 1
hour you invest in planning!
By strategically planning your vacation, you often experience a more relaxed
flow to your vacation. You may also be surprised with an actual increase in
vacation time by planning in advance for issues that detracted from your
vacation time in the past.
Let’s mark this as the year of more relaxed vacation time and conscious

“3 Keys to Anticipate Change for Positive Outcomes”
- What do Coors, Lego, and Mattell
all have in common?
The leaders in each company failed to
anticipate the industry trends. With change happening at
lightening speed, the ability or inability of leaders to anticipate
trends can lead to the success or failure of the company.
Coors didn’t anticipate the change in consumer beer preferences, Lego
missed the impact of the electronic revolution on their product, and
Mattell never expected the 10-year legal battle around the Barbie and
- You may be thinking . . . Where
does my strategic thinking and ability to anticipate change impact
the success or failure of the company? Isn’t it the executive leader
who anticipates change that impacts the company!
Absolutely. As the saying goes, the
buck stops at the highest level of leadership. However, one of the
critical factors in a team, organization or company’s success is an open
communication line across all levels from an Individual Contributor or
aspiring Manager up to the top Executive.
This collective awareness about changing trends at each level of
operations requires strategic thinking by each employee.
It’s just strategic thinking with different ranges of ‘peripheral
vision’ that requires a balance between divergent thinking and
convergent thinking that can be described in a few simple behaviors:
- Look both ways.
- Watch for oncoming traffic.
- Bring big picture thinking into
Let’s use an example: You’re
leading a product launch team, so you pay attention to what’s going on
in other areas of the company and external stakeholders that may impact
your launch. You keep tabs on other industries, markets, and research.
You notice ambiguous information and take time to look at all the
possibilities of what it could mean (divergent thinking) and
clarify the data to make sure you read the right signals and connect the
dots. (convergent thinking)
According to Paul J. H. Schoemaker, Research Director at Mack
Institute for Innovation Management at Wharton and expert in strategic
decision making, a ‘vigilant attitude’ is the “most important
trait of strategic leaders who are good at anticipating and exploiting
