A Personal Note from Gerrie

Day LilyHappy Spring 2014!

Now that we’ve put Winter 2014 behind us on the calendar, it’s a memorable day to celebrate all courageous acts that you’ve made with the country’s record breaking Winter season.

  • According to the National Weather Center, by mid February, New York City had its 14th snowstorm of the season and had the most snow ever recorded for a January-February period.
  • The Mid-West and Northeast Corridor broke other records in terms of number of days with frigid temperatures, snow fall, ice and power outages.

Although a snow fall is forecasted for week ahead, Spring always brings hope and ignites positive energy to take ACTION on what you envision for 2014.

  • Do you recall your 2014 New Year Goals? It’s time to put them front and center as we move into Spring.

One of my goals is to place a stronger emphasis on Courageous Leadership, thus the change in focus for my monthly newsletter. Although Courage is often defined by external behavior, according to Mary Anne Radmacker, “Courage doesn’t always ROAR. Sometimes, courage is the quite voice at the end of the day saying, “I will try again tomorrow.”

When you know what you stand for and have
focus, clarity, and passion about your goal, you can accomplish incredible results.

  • Do you know what you stand for that would inspire you to take courageous action . . . to stand up and be heard?

It’s a frequent question asked by many leaders who seek more meaning and fulfillment in their work. This often means getting clear about what you stand for, defining what you want to do, and redefine success on your own terms.

I invite you to read our Featured Article, “Align Your Life for Brilliance” to celebrate Spring by taking courageous steps forward. Then be open to realize and move into bigger dreams for your future.

Celebrate Spring!

Feature Article:
“Align Your Life for Brilliance!”

According to research with over 100 top achievers, success that is built to last requires alignment with three essential areas.

  • The authors describe these as meaning, thought style which is a ‘highly developed sense of accountability, audacity, passion, and responsible optimism,’ and action style which is ‘effective ways to take action’.

We refer to these as ‘focus – clarity – passion’.

  • Focus relates to your life purpose, values, drivers and motivators.

Which do you think is more brilliant – the light from 5 light bulbs or 1 laser beam spotlight? Right. When you have a laser focus on your definition of success, your brilliance shines through, almost effortlessly.

  • Clarity is the area that gets people stuck most often.

Why? We live in such a fast-paced, multi-dimensional world with many options that it’s difficult to get clear about what you want – even if it’s picking out toothpaste – which brand has the best whitening properties, flavor that you like ... oh, then there’s the dental health features…!

When you get really clear about what you WANT, then you begin to SEE what you want everywhere.

For example, if you want to purchase a red car, you’ll start to notice red cars everywhere! They were always there, you just didn’t notice them until you were clear about what you WANTED.

  • Passion that defines what you stand for is more complex to discern.

Passion can relate to a strong emotion that is driving you, such as anger or affection. In the context of this article, I define passion as a “strong liking or desire for or devotion to some activity, object, or concept” that inspires you to take positive action about something that you stand for.

The keys to aligning your life for brilliance is to get focused and clear about what you stand for, and define your ‘distinctive value’ so you play to your strengths and signature capabilities. As a result, you will find more meaning and fulfillment in your work life.

Once you put words to your natural strengths and learn how to put them into play each day – no matter what job you’re doing, you show up with a lighter and higher energy.

In my work with clients, there is an inner transformation when clients define their ‘distinctive value’. It’s the underlying reason that they make a huge leap in responsibility, compensation, and job satisfaction . . . they know what they want and are clear about their value!

How closely are you aligned with your brilliance?

Your Coaching Challenge:

  1. How do you define success?
    • If you reach the age of 95 or more, what do you want to have accomplished?
    • What would you love to do, be or accomplish in your life (personally or professionally) so that you consider your life to have been well-lived?
  2. What do you stand for?
    • What do you thoroughly enjoy doing in your job, business, or life activities?
    • Is there a cause about which you feel passionate? What is it?
